The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery team of King Fahd Medical City, has succeeded in performing a unique and complicated Surgical replacement of the Temporomandibular joint on a Saudi patient in his thirties, that enabled him to re-open his mouth, talk, move, and practice his normal life after the failure of all previous surgical attempts.

The patient had an accident led to fractures in the jaw and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), resulting in a fusion of the lower jaw with the base of the skull. He underwent a number of surgeries in several hospitals that was not specialized in Orthognathic surgeries. However, these fusions reoccurred; as exercises are required in traditional surgery for at least 6 months to prevent such reoccurrence.

After receiving the patient at King Fahd Medical City and conducting the medical examinations and the radiographic evaluation, a medical team was formed, led by the Medical City Consultant of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Abdulsalam AlJabab, Dr. Mohammed Al Kindi, Dr. Davide Rocchetta, Dr. Bilal Al Masri, and residents; Dr. Abdullah Al-Otaibi, Dr. Hassan Abu Saleh, Dr. Syed Siraj. The medical team, decided to remove marrow fusions and implant TMJ prosthesis in a way that confirms the uniqueness of this type of surgeries in the specialized services provided by the KFMC.

He added: "What distinguishes prosthesis joints is that there is no need for oral exercises and the patient can practice his life and use the jaws naturally after the operation, in addition to the appropriateness of this surgery for patients with joints fusions as a result of accidents. It is recommended for patients who have rheumatic bones, osteoarthritis and erosion, and for replacement of TMJ after being removed as a result of tumors."

Dr. Abdulsalam AlJabab, head of the medical team, stated that this medical achievement proves that there are Saudi medical cadres in the Kingdom, who are able to successfully do more complicated operations. Such operations were sent abroad for treatment.

" AlJabab " has pointed out that the idea of prosthetic joints have been adopted in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery after its deployment in orthopedic surgery, and has become part of the therapeutic services offered by Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at King Fahd Medical City.
