8th April, The International Conference on Counterfeited Drugs Risk

King Fahad Medical City, from 8-9 April, hosts the first international conference on counterfeited drugs sponsored by Dr. Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al Rabiah, Minister of Health, with the presence of many specialists and interested individuals in health sector along with the participation of many governmental sectors concerned with medicines issues.

Dr. Naif Al Yamani,  Director of Pharmacy Services Administration, stated that: "The conference mainly aims to raise the  awareness toward  counterfeited drugs risks on the public health and economy, and pointed out that the conference will be held over two days and will host many speakers from KSA as well as international speakers from  European countries (Italy and UK) who represent The Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) and World Health Organization to enrich the conference's sessions and introduce the recent methods for detecting counterfeited drugs".

"The conference discuss the establishment of Anti- Counterfeited Drugs programs in cooperation with the related governmental sectors such as Saudi Food and Drug Authority and its role in eliminating this phenomenon and the integrative role between the bodies through the Ministry of Commerce, Saudi Customs and the General Directorate of Border Guards in eliminating counterfeited drugs trafficking phenomenon". Dr. Naif Al Yamani Added.

Dr. Al Yamani explained that the conference reviews more than 14 scientific papers on the recent developments of Anti- counterfeited drugs, pointing out that according to the World Health Organization, the annual average sales of counterfeited drugs over the world reach up to 75 billion dollars annually stressing that one and half million people die yearly as a result of taking these drugs. As the statistics of counterfeited drugs in the Arab countries reached 25% to 30%, 10% all over the world and 50% of the sales are made online through the internet.
