A medical team from King Fahad Medical City (KFMC), represented by Interventional

Radiology Department, has completed its first Cryoablation by Radiology for a Saudi girl with a pelvic tumor.

Dr. Fahad Al-Ghofaili, the Chief Executive Director of King Fahad Medical City, emphasized that KFMC is always seeking to localize modern technologies, especially in the field of oncology, which helps physicians to treat such cases and speed recovery, pointing out that KFMC keeps abreast of recent developments in the medical field, which will contribute to continue work towards the development of quality of health care services to be provided to patients.

The 16-year-old girl was complaining of mechanical pains in the left pelvic bones due to benign bone tumor, which was developed as it goes out of bones towards the soft tissues around the bone causing pains and pressure on the nerves of the left leg.  

A medical team was formed under the leadership of Dr. Salem Bauones, interventional radiologist to discuss the case of the patient and find solutions to her. The team composed of Orthopedic Oncology Surgery Section, Radiation Oncology Department, Interventional Radiology Department and Diagnostic Radiology Department and was supported by the Head of Technicians in Interventional Radiology Department,Mr. Mohammed Idrees, Dr. Mohammed Al-Shaikh, Chairman of Interventional Radiology Department, Dr. Khalid Al-Dossari, Chairman of Medical Imaging Department,  and Mr. Hasan Al-Dlosary Director of Medical Imaging Administration.

Bauones explained that the place and increasing size of tumor required a major surgical intervention to reduce the possibility of tumor complications. The surgery was performed by Cryoablation under guidance of interventional radiology which succeeded after it had lasted for three hours.

He added: "Cryoablation may open up wider opportunities to treat some tumors, in cooperation with Radiation Oncology Department, Orthopedic Oncology Surgery Section, Urology, Gynecology and Obstetrics Departments, which in turn will help to treat oncology patients.

It is worth mentioning that the advantages of Cryoablation depends on the ease of seeing the treatment area and its coverage of tumor under CT scan or MRI and the possibility of using it for calcified bone tumors without general anesthesia of patient.
