Research

Research is an integral component of the Rehabilitation Hospital and King Fahad Medical City (RH-KFMC) mission and vision. We aim to maintain a vigorous research agenda at the hospital that focuses on improving areas of rehabilitation treatment and care. RH-KFMC believes that investments in today’s research will result in tomorrow’s advances in patient care.

Our Research Code of Ethics

The RH-KFMC research is conducted in accordance with the highest ethical principles and regard for the protection of our study volunteers. Research is conducted upon the approval of King Fahad Medical City Institutional Review Board (IRB).

Lectures & Seminars

To encourage research and establish a strong research environment the hospital launched mandatory research training to all clinicians. The training program includes:

1. Clinical Research Training Course (CRTC) for Health Care Providers (April-June 2011)

·         The CRTC has been established to develop an accepted standard of knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts in epidemiology, study design and Biostatistics.

·         The course contains 3 lectures. This course is intended to enhance the basic research knowledge among KFMC staff. This training will focus on different study designs used in clinical research with emphasis on advantages and disadvantages of each. In addition, a clear description on bias and confounding factors will be also discussed.

·         Basic measurements of epidemiology covering prevalence, incidence, relative risk and odd ratio will be defined and explained. On the other hand screening performance test indices including sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value will be provided. Moreover, additional measurements will be also highlighted.

·         Basics in Biostatistics will cover the indices of central tendency (Mean, Median and Mode) and dispersion of data indices covering Range, Standard deviation and standard error will be explained. Besides, elements of a statistical test including null and alternative hypotheses will be discussed with interpretation of p-value, confidence interval, types of error and others. Different types of variables and corresponding statistical tests used in inferential statistics will be also provided.

2. City Grand Round about Research Process (September 2011)

·         From Idea to Publication

3. How to Write a Research Proposal: (October-November-December2011)

·         A research proposal is an essential pre-requisite to any project. The goal of this workshop is to systematically teach the process by which one takes a conceptual idea for a clinical research project and converts it into a research proposal or grant application. ٍStaff will use their own research question to build a proposal for a research project that they intend to conduct in the future. Key elements of clinical research design, such as articulation of testable hypotheses and specific aims, selection of study subjects, measurement techniques, analytic approaches, sample size and power will be reinforced throughout the course. Attendees will also develop expertise in critiquing other proposals and in responding to critique of their own proposal as a key skill in fostering effective proposal writing. This workshop will be a good asset for all those who are interested to build up a strong protocol development.

4. How to Write a Manuscript Workshop: (January-February-March 2012)

·         Scientific writing should reflect the research precision and it importance. The purpose of the workshop is to educate investigators about the overall organization of a manuscript and the structure and function of each of the components.

·         The workshop will describe briefly the research path starting with a good scientific question through a well structured proposal to the manuscript. The expanded IMRAD model will be introduced and explained in simple, scientific, and encouraging way. Examples about the common mistakes encountered while writing through exercises and examples will be presented giving the participants a chance to criticize and recognize the good informative ways of writing.

·         The journey of manuscript submission and peer review process will be explained to the participants with tips and guidance to respond to the reviewers' comments.

·         The workshop is expected to encourage the investigators to produce a complete and polished manuscript suitable for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.
