Dear Colleagues,

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to join us in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for Medicine 2010: Raising the Quality of Education and Care, a summit designed to review and share the ACP experience for raising the standards of education and training for our physicians, as well as, optimizing our patient care.

We are proud to bring together distinguished leaders and experts from the American College of Physicians and National leaders of healthcare in Saudi Arabia to exchange their knowledge, ideas and expertise. Our aim with this summit is to hopefully implement changes in the quality of healthcare we provide to our patients with a better understanding of challenges, and incorporating the success made by a well known organization like ACP that are exceedingly experienced in training internist and sharpening their skills for providing the best care to the patients.

MESSAGE

We are delighted to present an innovative scientific program at this meeting, tapping into the rich and diverse educational and human resources of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and the medical leadership from Saudi Arabia..

We will hear from ACP experts regarding current trends in medical education, the crucial role of internists in education, research and the role organizations such as ACP can play in the enhancement of quality education. The increasing challenges physicians encounter with end of life issues will be dealt both from the Western and Eastern perspective with a case based panel followed by a special session on palliative care.

All countries are facing increasing disease burden and are struggling to develop cost effective, appropriate health care delivery systems, we will hear about this issue both from the Saudi Arabia and USA perspective.

We will also address the role of internists in the rapidly advancing technological global village, and how the internet can be used to enhance patient care and keep them abreast of current developments and new advances. We will also hear about appropriate use of diagnostic modalities. We will share the KFMC experience of etiquette based medicine and also hear about this topic from an Islamic perspective.

On the last day of the conference we have set aside ample time where attendees will have an opportunity to interact with our distinguished speakers and review issues dealing with training opportunities and incorporating new technology in clinical practices with the objective of improving patient care.

My thanks and appreciation to my colleagues at KFMC and a special thanks to our guests from USA who have enriched us with their presence.(It’s a rare treat to have four Masters of ACP participating in a scientific meeting and the fact that it is in a distant land adds even more value.)

We look forward to an exciting and informative conference which we anticipate will plant the seeds for an ongoing and mutually beneficial collaboration between internists in KSA with ACP —insha Allah.

It is my pleasure to take this opportunity to help to launch "Medicine 2010: Raising the Quality of Education and Care."  The American College of Physicians is honored to have been invited to co-present this summit meeting with the King Fahad Medical City Department of Medicine.
The meeting is designed to review and share experiences for raising the standards of education and training and optimizing patient care. You will be presented with information about current trends in medical education, the crucial role of internists in education and research, and the role organizations such as ours can play in the enhancement of quality education. The increasing challenges physicians encounter with end of life issues will be presented from both the Western and Eastern perspectives with a case based panel followed by a special session on palliative care.
By bringing together leaders from the American College of Physicians and national leaders of health care from Saudi Arabia to exchange knowledge, ideas and expertise, true learning and collaboration can occur.  We are all facing many challenges in our profession and learning from each other will surely help each of us to better understand and overcome those challenges. The American College of Physicians is excited to host four medical residents from the King Fahad Medical City Department of Medicine at our annual meeting in Toronto in April. The residents will be participating in our Doctor’s Dilemma contest, which is a first for the kingdom, and sure to be a wonderful experience for the residents.

I would like to thank Dr. Faroque Khan for inviting me to speak to you and for coordinating such an important meeting. It is our hope that this meeting will lay the foundation for an ongoing and mutually beneficial collaboration between internists in Saudi Arabia and the American College of Physicians. I hope that you enjoy all of the meeting’s offerings and expand your base of knowledge, and continue to represent the best of internal medicine.
